Facial Lesion Removal

LASER PROCEDURES

As one of the most exciting and innovative scientific achievements of the past few decades, laser technology is being utilized throughout the health care community. Dr. Peck uses carbon dioxide laser to treat a variety of facial skin imperfections.

WHAT IS A LASER?

The word ‘laser” is an acronym which stands for Light Amplification by the Stimulated Emission of Radiation. A surgical laser as  the CO2 laser, is a beam of light capable of removing unwanted tissue. The laser vaporizes skin cells by emitting bursts of radiation that are absorbed by water in these cells. Laser light penetrates to a very precise, controlled depth, making the procedure safe and predictable, while reducing the risk of scarring or pigmentation problems. Laser procedures are bloodless and performed right here in our office.

THE BENEFITS OF LASER SURGERY

In conventional surgery, it is often necessary to remove healthy tissue along with diseased tissue. The laser, however, is capable of isolating and removing targeted cells without affecting the healthy cells surrounding them.

The risk of infection is reduced with laser surgery because only the beam of light comes in contact with the tissue. In addition, bacteria and viruses are vaporized along with body cells.

Because the heating effect of the laser’s energy cauterizes or seals small blood vessels, there is less or no bleeding and swelling. There is less or no pain connected with the surgery because the beam seals nerve endings.

THE PROCEDURE

A local anesthetic or light sedation is given to ensure that you are comfortable throughout the procedure. Dr. Peck directs the laser beam toward your skin imperfection. The laser quickly and accurately vaporizes the unwanted skin lesion leaving a healthy skin untouched.

WHAT CAN BE EXPECTED?

In most cases, only one treatment is needed. The initial redness fades in a few days to a light pink, which can be concealed with makeup. The discoloration usually disappears in one to three months. Results of the laser treatment depend on many factors such as the size, shape and location of the imperfection, and the patient’s heredity, age and skin condition. In general, areas of the laser treatment heal very nice and without any scars at all. Patient’s acceptance and satisfaction with laser treatment is very high.
