Sedation helps patients feel relaxed and safe during surgical procedures. At Los Angeles Oral & Facial Surgery, sedation is customized to your health, your preferences, and the complexity of your treatment. Dr. Tow offers sedation, including pediatric IV sedation, in our accredited on-site surgical suite and uses hospital-grade monitoring for safety and precision. Sedation is especially helpful for patients with dental anxiety, sensitive gag reflexes, or longer surgical procedures. Our goal is to make your visit feel as easy and stress-free as possible while maintaining the highest standard of clinical care.

Consultation and health review

Before any sedation is scheduled, Dr. Tow will review your medical history and medications. We’ll also go over sedation options, explain how it works, and answer any questions you have.

Day-of preparation

You’ll receive clear pre-op instructions about when to stop eating or drinking. When you arrive, we’ll help you get settled and begin monitoring your vital signs.

Sedation and procedure

Sedation starts before surgery begins. You’ll enter a relaxed, sleep-like state, though you’ll still breathe on your own and respond to touch or voice. Dr. Tow performs the procedure while our team ensures your comfort and safety.

Recovery and discharge

You’ll rest in our recovery room until you're fully alert and cleared to leave. A friend or family member must drive you home, and our team will provide detailed post-op instructions.

FAQ's

Not exactly. Sedation puts you into a deeply relaxed state, but you’re not under general anesthesia. You’ll still breathe independently and may be slightly responsive, though you won’t remember the procedure.

Yes, sedation is extremely safe when administered by a trained oral and maxillofacial surgeon. Dr. Tow holds medical and dental degrees, hospital-based anesthesia training, and active certifications in ACLS, PALS, ATLS, and California general anesthesia, and he’s also certified to provide pediatric IV sedation. We follow the same safety protocols used in hospital operating rooms.

Most surgical treatments can be done under sedation. Dr. Tow will let you know if it’s appropriate based on your health history, procedure type, and level of anxiety or comfort.
